Product Overview
Socket weld flanges are used on small-bore high-pressure piping: the pipe enters a recess in the flange and a single fillet weld secures it. No bevel is needed, and the socket keeps the pipe aligned during welding, which is why this type dominates instrument and utility run piping up to NPS 2-1/2.
When to Specify Socket Weld
Choose SW for small-bore, high-pressure and high-temperature lines where the extra strength and alignment of a socket joint is useful, and where a small internal crevice at the weld is acceptable. For larger bore or where internal inspection by radiography is required, specify weld neck instead.
Specifications and Standards
Socket weld flanges for small-bore piping to ASME B16.5 and its EN / GB / JIS equivalents - the conventional range runs 1/2 to 2-1/2 inch. Class 150 and 300 are stocked and 600-2500 made on request, with a raised face as standard. The pipe enters a machined socket recess and is secured by a single fillet weld, so no pipe-end bevelling is needed and alignment is held by the socket. Materials ASTM A182 F304/304L, F316/316L, F321, duplex F51/F53 and nickel alloys.
