Heat Treatment of Stainless Steel Welds: Types and Purpose

Heat treatment of stainless steel welds relieves stress, restores corrosion resistance and can replace pickling. Learn bright annealing furnace types.

Stainless steel pipe stack
Quick answer: heat treatment of stainless steel welds is used to relieve welding stress, restore corrosion resistance in and around the weld, and improve the surface, and it is applied either as intermediate treatment during production or as finished-product treatment. In stainless welded pipe production, bright heat treatment in a protective atmosphere can produce a clean surface and remove the need for traditional pickling. The main furnace types are roller bottom, mesh belt and muffle bright annealing furnaces, chosen by output, pipe diameter and wall thickness.

Why Stainless Welds Are Heat Treated

Welding changes the microstructure of stainless steel and leaves residual stress and, in some cases, chromium-depleted zones that reduce corrosion resistance. Heat treatment is used to address those effects. In the production of stainless steel welded pipes, heat treatment can be performed as an intermediate step and again on the finished product. Because bright treatment produces a clean, light surface, the traditional pickling process can often be eliminated, which improves product quality and avoids the environmental pollution associated with pickling.

Types of Bright Heat Treatment Furnace

There are three common types of bright heat treatment furnace used for stainless welded pipe. First, the roller bottom bright heat treatment furnace. It suits heat treatment of large quantities of steel pipe with an hourly output above about 1.0 tonne, and can use protective gases such as high-purity hydrogen and ammonia. It can also provide a rapid cooling system for the pipe.
Second, the mesh belt type bright heat treatment furnace. It suits small diameter, thin walled steel pipe with an hourly output of roughly 0.3 to 1.0 tonne. Long stainless steel weld lengths of up to about 40 metres can be handled in this type of furnace.
Third, the muffle furnace type bright heat treatment furnace. The steel pipe is placed on a continuous carrier frame and heated inside a muffle tube. This type can process high-quality small diameter, thin walled pipe at a relatively low cost, at roughly 0.3 tonne per hour or higher.

What Good Stainless Welding Requires

Stainless steel welding needs full penetration, minimal oxygen and other contaminants in the weld zone, and a heat-affected zone that is as small as practical. Tungsten inert gas welding, in which a tungsten electrode is protected by inert gas, offers high adaptability, high welding quality and good fusion behaviour, and is widely used in the chemical, nuclear and food industries. The heat treatment that follows should be matched to the grade and to the service so that corrosion resistance and mechanical properties are restored without introducing distortion or unwanted phase changes.

Intermediate vs Finished Heat Treatment

Intermediate heat treatment is carried out between forming or welding steps to soften the material, relieve stress and prepare it for further working. Finished-product heat treatment is carried out on the completed pipe to deliver the final surface and properties. Both stages must be controlled, because temperature, atmosphere purity, heating rate and cooling rate all influence the result. For bright annealing, the protective atmosphere must be maintained throughout the cycle to keep the surface oxide-free.

Selecting a Heat Treatment Route

Choose the furnace type and cycle according to output, pipe size, wall thickness and surface requirement. Roller bottom furnaces suit high-volume production; mesh belt furnaces suit long lengths and small to medium diameters; muffle furnaces suit smaller diameter, thin walled pipe at lower cost. The grade of stainless steel and the required corrosion performance should always be stated, because they set the limits for temperature and atmosphere.
Heat treatment is only as good as its control. Atmosphere purity, temperature uniformity and cooling rate decide whether the weld comes out clean, corrosion resistant and dimensionally stable.

How SPAI STEEL Supports Stainless Welded Pipe

SPAI STEEL, operated by Hunan Spai Pipe Industry Co., Ltd under SP Group, has served pipe buyers since 1996 and exports to more than 100 countries. The company produces stainless and alloy pipe in Wenzhou Longwan and carbon steel pipe in Tianjin Jinghai, and works to standards including GB, API, ASTM, ASME/ANSI, BS, DIN, JIS and GOST. Products include ERW pipe, seamless pipe, LSAW and SSAW pipe, fittings and flanges, structural sections and stainless and alloy pipe. Third-party inspection by SGS, BV, TUV or TUBOSCOPE can be arranged.

FAQ

Why is heat treatment needed after welding stainless steel?

It relieves welding stress, restores corrosion resistance in and near the weld, and improves the surface. It also allows bright treatment to replace traditional pickling.

What are the types of bright annealing furnaces for stainless pipe?

The three common types are the roller bottom furnace, the mesh belt furnace and the muffle furnace. They differ mainly in output, pipe size and cost.

Can heat treatment replace pickling for stainless welded pipe?

Bright heat treatment can produce a clean surface that removes the need for traditional pickling, which also avoids the environmental pollution associated with pickling.

Which welding process suits stainless steel?

Tungsten inert gas welding is widely used because it gives good penetration, high quality and good fusion, and it is common in the chemical, nuclear and food industries.
