Stainless Steel Pipe: Characteristics and Selection Basics

Core characteristics of stainless steel pipe, how corrosion resistance is tested, and selection basics for fluid, welding and polishing needs.

Quick answer: Stainless steel pipe is chosen for corrosion resistance, a high strength-to-weight ratio and clean fluid handling. It is made as seamless or welded pipe, in round or special-shaped sections, and widely used to carry oil, natural gas, water, gas and steam. Selection should match the grade to the corrosion environment and match the welding and polishing requirements to the final product, because a grade that performs well in a clean, dry atmosphere may not suit coastal or chemical service.

Core Characteristics of Stainless Steel Pipe

Stainless steel pipes are long strips of steel used mainly as pipelines to transport fluids such as oil, natural gas, water, gas and steam. Any steel pipe subject to fluid pressure must undergo a hydrostatic test to verify its pressure resistance and quality: there should be no leakage, wetting or expansion under pressure. For the same bending and torsion strength, stainless steel pipe is lighter in weight, so it is also widely used in the manufacture of mechanical parts and engineering structures.

Corrosion Resistance and How It Is Tested

Most stainless steel products are required to have good corrosion resistance. Some buyers test it by heating a sodium chloride (NaCl) aqueous solution to boiling, soaking the sample, then washing and drying it and weighing the weight loss to determine the degree of corrosion. One practical caution: when a product is polished, the emery cloth or sandpaper contains iron, which can leave rust spots on the surface during the test. Those spots are a test artefact, not necessarily a material fault.

Seamless vs Welded, Round vs Shaped

By production method, stainless steel pipe is divided into seamless pipe and welded, or seam, pipe. By cross-section, it is divided into round tube and special-shaped tube. Round steel pipe is the most widely used, but special shapes are also produced: square, rectangle, semicircle, hexagon, equilateral triangle and octagon. The section required is set by the application, not by preference.

Welding and Polishing Requirements by Application

Different end uses place different demands on welding performance. Tableware usually does not require welding properties, and some pot producers are the same. Most products, however, need raw material with good welding properties, including secondary tableware, thermos cups, steel pipes, water heaters and water dispensers.
Polishing is a second processing requirement. At present most stainless steel products are polished during production, and only a few products such as water heater and water dispenser tanks do not need polishing. This means the raw material usually needs good polishing properties, because the final finish depends on how the material responds to polishing.

Selection Basics for Buyers

Start from the service environment. Define what the pipe will carry, whether it will be exposed to moisture, salt or chemicals, and whether pressure containment is critical. Then set the grade, the production method, the section shape and the surface finish, and confirm that the raw material has the welding and polishing behaviour your process needs. A grade selected only on price, without checking these requirements, is the most common source of rework.
Corrosion resistance depends on the grade, the service environment and the surface condition together - selecting a stainless grade without defining the medium and finish leaves the biggest risk unmanaged.

FAQ

Does stainless steel pipe need a hydrostatic test?

Yes. Steel pipe subject to fluid pressure must undergo a hydrostatic test to verify pressure resistance and quality, with no leakage, wetting or expansion under pressure.

What shapes are available besides round?

Special-shaped tube includes square, rectangular, semicircular, hexagonal, equilateral triangle and octagonal sections. Round pipe remains the most widely used form.

Do all stainless steel products need to be polished?

No. Most products are polished during production, but only a few, such as water heater and water dispenser tanks, do not need polishing. That is why raw material polishing performance matters for most buyers.

Do tableware and thermos cups need the same weldability?

No. Tableware usually does not require welding properties, while products such as secondary tableware, thermos cups, water heaters and water dispensers need raw material with good welding properties.
