Precision Steel Pipe vs Spiral Steel Pipe: What Differs

Equal and unequal tee fittings
Quick answer: Precision steel pipe is a cold-drawn or hot-rolled product made to tight tolerances on inner and outer wall dimensions, with a clean surface and no oxide layer, and it is used mainly for pneumatic and hydraulic components. Spiral steel pipe is a pressure-capable product whose forming route suits general pressure service. The two are selected on different criteria: dimensional accuracy on one side, pressure duty and forming route on the other.

What Precision Steel Pipe Is

Precision steel pipe is a high-precision tube produced by cold drawing or hot rolling. Its inner and outer walls are free of oxide layer, and the product is characterised by the ability to hold pressure without leakage, high dimensional precision, high surface smoothness, freedom from cold deformation and the ability to be flared or flattened without cracking. Its typical destination is pneumatic or hydraulic components such as cylinders. The chemical composition considered for the grade includes carbon, silicon, manganese, sulfur, phosphorus and chromium.

What Spiral Steel Pipe Is

Spiral steel pipe is described as a pipe with high pressure capability, available as a relatively rough cast product or as a cold-drawn product. Its forming route and resulting seam geometry are what distinguish it from a precision tube, and it is chosen where pressure duty and general service matter more than fine dimensional control.

The Core Differences

The principal feature of spiral steel pipe is its ability to withstand large pressure, and it can be supplied in a rougher condition or as a cold-drawn product.
Precision steel pipe is a more recent product category, and it exists because buyers need strict control of tolerances and roughness on both the inside and outside wall. Achieving that control is the whole point of the cold-drawn precision route.

Features of Cold-Drawn Precision Steel Pipe

Cold-drawn precision tube offers a smaller outer diameter and can be produced in small batches to high precision. It delivers good surface quality, can be made with more complex cross-sectional shapes, and its dense metal structure gives superior performance.

Standards, Uses and Delivery Conditions

Common specifications for precision tube include GB/T3639, GB/T8713 and DIN2391-2. Typical applications are mechanical structures, hydraulic equipment and automotive parts.
Delivery condition is normally agreed with a code. BK means the tube is not heat treated after final cold working, so it can only be deformed very little. BKW means it is heat treated after final cold working and then given a small cold deformation, which allows limited cold forming such as bending and flaring at the pipe end. BKS means the tube is finally cold worked and then stress-relieved by annealing below Ac1. GBK means the finally cold-worked tube is fully annealed under a protective atmosphere. NBK means the finally cold-worked tube is normalised under a protective atmosphere.
Precision tube is bought for tolerance and surface quality; spiral pipe is bought for pressure duty and forming route. Specifying one when the other is required is the most common buying mistake.

How to Specify

State the application first, then the required standard, size tolerance, surface finish and delivery condition. Where the duty is pneumatic or hydraulic and tight tolerances matter, the precision route is appropriate. Where the pipe must carry pressure in general service, a spiral product may be the better match. SPAI STEEL supplies carbon, stainless and alloy pipe and can confirm the standard and delivery condition that fit the job.

FAQ

Can precision steel pipe be used for hydraulic cylinders?

Yes. Pneumatic and hydraulic components such as cylinders are its main application, because it offers high precision and a clean, oxide-free surface.

Is spiral steel pipe welded or seamless?

Descriptions vary by product. The key selection point is pressure capability and forming route rather than the label alone, so the actual construction should be confirmed against the ordered standard.

What do the delivery condition codes mean?

BK is not heat treated after final cold working, BKW is heat treated and lightly cold worked, BKS is stress-relieved, GBK is fully annealed and NBK is normalised, the last two under protective atmosphere.

Which standards apply to precision tube?

GB/T3639, GB/T8713 and DIN2391-2 are common references. The standard should be agreed together with size tolerance and surface requirement.
