Quick answer: Oil casing supports the well wall of an oil or gas well so the well can operate normally after drilling. Each well uses several casing layers according to depth and geology, and because the casing is cemented in place it cannot be reused. Water quality control, annular protection and protection against mechanical and bacterial corrosion are the practical priorities.
Casing Is a One-Time Material
Oil casing is run to support the well wall of an oil and gas well and to ensure normal operation after the drilling process is completed. Each well uses multiple layers of casing based on different drilling depths and geological conditions. After the casing is run, the cement is cemented. Unlike tubing and drill pipe, it cannot be reused. It is a disposable material, which is why protection starts at the planning stage rather than after installation.
Start With Water Quality
The first precaution is water quality compliance with strict testing and management. Operators should implement decontamination and re-injection, strengthen the cleaning of main water pipes, achieve standard water quality at the station and at the bottom of the well, and reduce the entry of corrosion sources into the annular space. Most downstream corrosion problems begin here.
Protect New Injection Wells
For newly commissioned water injection wells, annular protective fluid should be used on the basis of dosing and sterilization, and it should be added to the system regularly. This maintains a protective environment in the annulus instead of leaving the casing exposed to the injected water.
Reduce Mechanical Abrasion
Mechanical abrasion accelerates casing corrosion. To limit it, a rubber ring can be added to the tubing joint, or a centralizer can be fitted at the serious part of the well, to prevent the tubing from scratching the casing during operation and water injection. The aim is to keep the tubing from contacting the casing directly.
Control Bacterial Corrosion Under Scale
Where bacterial corrosion under scale is serious and sulfate-reducing bacteria grow slowly and are killed at high temperature, high temperature water or steam at 100 degrees Celsius should be injected into the annulus regularly to kill the bacteria under the scale. This targets the corrosion that hides beneath deposits, where ordinary treatment cannot reach.
Until water quality and annular corrosion are under control, adding cathodic protection or coated casing is treating the symptom rather than the source.
When to Consider Cathodic Protection and Coated Casing
Promotion of cathodic protection and coated casing is not recommended until corrosion of the injection well casing is effectively controlled. Used too early, these measures can mask an unresolved root cause. Buyers should also specify the casing grade, connection, standard and inspection route so that the delivered product matches the well conditions.
FAQ
Can oil casing be reused after a well is abandoned?
No. It is cemented in place after being run, unlike tubing and drill pipe, so it is a one-time material.
Why is water quality so important for casing life?
Corrosion sources entering the annular space drive casing corrosion, so standard water quality at the station and well bottom removes the root of the problem.
How is mechanical abrasion controlled?
A rubber ring on the tubing joint or a centralizer at the affected part of the well keeps the tubing from scratching the casing during operation and water injection.
When should cathodic protection be used?
Not until the corrosion of the injection well casing has been effectively controlled, otherwise it addresses the symptom rather than the cause.
