How Stainless Steel Welded Pipe Is Produced

Stainless steel welded pipe is made from coil: slitting, roll forming, longitudinal welding, bead grinding, sizing, cutting and finishing.

Seamless stainless steel pipe ends
Quick answer: stainless steel welded pipe is produced from stainless steel coil. The coil is slit to the correct width, roll formed into a round section with the edges aligned, welded along the longitudinal seam, ground and sized, cut to length, and then finished, polished and marked. Because the coil is continuous, the process can produce long lengths efficiently, and the key quality points are strip thickness accuracy, edge alignment, weld penetration and the protective gas used during welding.

Step 1 - Coil Slitting and Strip Preparation

Production begins with the original material, stainless steel coil or strip. According to each size or customer requirement, a large coil is slit into narrower coils of the width needed for the finished pipe and fed through the strip delivery system. This stage requires accurate strip dimensions for the given thickness, and the incoming material is inspected as part of quality control. Checking the input material early reduces defects later in the line.

Step 2 - Roll Forming and Edge Alignment

The slit strip passes through a series of forming rolls and an edge alignment system. The strip is gradually curled so that the two edges come together. The accuracy of this two-sided edge alignment is as important as anything else on the line, because it directly affects the quality and stability of the finished weld. Poor alignment produces an uneven seam, which is difficult to weld cleanly.

Step 3 - Welding the Longitudinal Seam

At the welding station, electrical power, typically around 270 to 280 amperes, melts the strip edges and forms the joint between them. Shield or backing gas protects the weld and helps clean the weld zone. The gas has a main protective effect on the welding electrode and also helps to displace impurities and clean the weld as it forms. Correct gas flow and arc control are essential for full penetration and a sound seam.

Step 4 - Weld Bead Grinding and Sizing

After welding, the raised weld bead is ground and polished using different types of abrasive. The pipe then passes through sizing and straightening dies that bring the section to a uniform round shape at the standard diameter and keep it straight. For square or rectangular tube, the section entering the straightening dies is already rectangular or square. Grinding and sizing together determine the surface finish and the dimensional accuracy of the finished pipe.

Step 5 - Cutting to Length

The pipe is then cut to the required length. It may be cut with a blade or with a cutter, and for some products an angle machine is used. To obtain a high-quality cut without trimming the tube head, a base length is allowed for. Because the pipe can leave a burr or an uneven end after cutting, the cut face may be returned to the finishing machine or treated with a handheld tool to bring it to the required standard.

Step 6 - Finishing, Polishing and Marking

Finishing is a series of detailed steps that can include abrasive treatment, oiling, cleaning, polishing and a final soft-cloth treatment. The sequence is arranged according to whether the product is square, rectangular or round tube, and according to the required surface quality. Finally, the pipe is marked according to customer requirements or the company quality standard, which supports preservation, classification, product identification and traceability during storage and shipment.
In welded stainless pipe, the seam is the part to watch. Edge alignment, gas shielding and weld bead control decide whether the pipe performs like the strip it was made from.

Quality Control Along the Production Line

Quality control runs through the whole process rather than sitting at the end. It starts with inspection of the incoming strip, continues with control of strip width and thickness, edge alignment and weld parameters, and includes dimensional checks after sizing and a final inspection of surface, straightness and length. Where the project requires it, third-party inspection can be arranged to verify the finished product.

How SPAI STEEL Supports Stainless Welded Pipe Projects

SPAI STEEL, operated by Hunan Spai Pipe Industry Co., Ltd under SP Group, has served pipe buyers since 1996 and exports to more than 100 countries. Stainless and alloy production is based in Wenzhou Longwan, with carbon steel production in Tianjin Jinghai. The company works to GB, API, ASTM, ASME/ANSI, BS, DIN, JIS and GOST standards and produces ERW pipe, seamless pipe, LSAW and SSAW pipe, fittings and flanges, structural sections and stainless and alloy pipe. Third-party inspection by SGS, BV, TUV or TUBOSCOPE can be arranged.

FAQ

How is stainless steel welded pipe made?

It is made from stainless steel coil that is slit to width, roll formed into a round section, welded along the longitudinal seam, ground and sized, cut to length, then finished, polished and marked.

What are the most important production variables?

Strip thickness accuracy, edge alignment, weld current and penetration, and protective gas flow are the variables that most affect the final weld quality and dimensional accuracy.

Can welded stainless pipe be supplied in long lengths?

Yes. Because the process starts from continuous coil, welded stainless pipe is commonly produced in long lengths, which can reduce the number of field joints.

How is weld quality controlled?

Quality control covers incoming strip inspection, strip width and thickness, edge alignment, weld parameters, dimensional checks after sizing and final inspection of surface, straightness and length.
